Making our centres safer for you

YMCA of Greater Toronto Health & Fitness safety standards during COVID-19

Nothing is more important than your safety. We are following all regulations and guidelines from our government and public health officials to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Safety measures in all of our Health & Fitness centres include:

New safety protocols

Virtual Programs

Measures we’re taking to promote physical distancing

  • Equipment has been spaced at least 8 feet apart.
  • A modified class schedule to ensure staggered entry.
  • We have capped the number of members in our centres at any given time. Members must book a time in advance of their visit.
  • Only dry areas of locker rooms are available at the moment and usage will be modified to promote physical distancing.
  • We have clear markings on the floors which indicate how far you need to be from others at any given time.
Troubled Teenager

Enhanced cleaning and hygiene practices

  • You’ll see our staff in personal protective equipment at all times.
  • All members should be wiping down equipment and workout spaces before and after use.
  • Our staff will be consistently disinfecting high touch surface areas, and cleaning continuously throughout the day.
  • Increase in signage to remind everyone to wash and sanitize their hands regularly.
  • Disinfectant wipes are readily available throughout the building.

Additional Measures to Increase the Safety in our Centres

Virtual Programs
  • At this time, only members 15 years of age and over are able to access our Health and Fitness centres. This is only a temporary measure and we are working towards welcoming all of our members back into the centres soon.
  • Each member, volunteer, and staff will be screened before they enter.
  • A new booking system will limit the overall number of members in the Y at a given time.
  • Where possible, our outdoor spaces, have been set up as extra programming space so we can spread out as much as possible.
  • We have floor markers to indicate appropriate physical distancing space and in some cases, to indicate a directional flow for walking traffic.
YMCA of Greater Toronto Building
  • During the first phase of our re-opening, members can use their home facility only. We will inform you as soon as you are able to use additional YMCA Health and Fitness centres
  • Areas in our facilities that don’t allow for physical distancing will remain temporarily closed.
  • Do not share work out areas or equipment with others, do not spot one another, or use more than one piece of equipment at a time.
  • There will be a limited amount of equipment available during Group Fitness Classes and no equipment will be available to borrow for the time being.
  • As always, our staff are here to help you through these safety measures. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask a member of our team.

PLEASE NOTE: If you require accommodations or have any accessibility needs, please don’t hesitate to connect with our team members and we will be happy to support you.

How you can help keep everyone safe

We’re taking many new steps to give you a great workout experience and protect you from COVID-19 as much as possible. But we need your help.

We think of you as part of our Y family, and family members have each other’s back. There are a few simple things you can do to make the YMCA a safer experience for all of us to enjoy.

Things you already do at the gym

You can make a big difference by being extra vigilant about things you already do at the gym.

  • Use disinfectant wipes which are available throughout the building to wipe down equipment before and after you use it.
  • Follow the signs. It’s the pre-COVID equivalent of running in the designated direction on the track, or respecting “out of order” signs. Now, we’ve set up wayfinding to help you move through the centre with plenty of space (e.g., designated entrances and exits to enable one-way traffic flow). All you have to do is follow along.

Things you already do to protect yourself and others from COVID-19

We’ve all grown accustomed to a “new normal”. Please take the same precautions at the Y that you would take anywhere else:

  • Wear a mask while indoors, right up until you are performing a physical activity.
  • Keep your distance and stay at least 6 feet away from others.
  • Wash your hands often and use the hand sanitizer we’ve provided throughout the building.

Finally, please help us implement these new steps to keep yourself and other members as safe as possible

  • When you arrive, please wait for a staff member to check you in and conduct a brief screening.
  • Do not move equipment. We’ve set it up to ensure you have plenty of space to easily keep your physical distance from other members.
  • Do not share work out areas or equipment with others, do not spot one another, or use more than one piece of equipment at a time.
  • When your workout time has ended, please exit the building so that others may use their scheduled workout time safely.

As always, our volunteers and staff are here for you. If you’re unsure of what to do, or need help finding something, just ask.
